Using Your AT&T Phone Internationally
Stay connected abroad with your AT&T phone! This guide will show you how to use your phone overseas, including checking compatibility, activating roaming, and using a local SIM card.
Will your phone work abroad?
- Visit AT&T's travel guide to see if your phone works in your destination country. [Travel Guide website]
- Alternatively, call AT&T International Customer Care at 1-800-331-0500.
Using AT&T roaming:
- Activate international roaming on your account by calling 1-800-331-0500, dialing 611 from your phone, or visiting an AT&T store.
- Review international roaming rates for your destination country. These include:
- Per-text message fees
- Per-kilobyte data charges (megabyte rates are also available)
- Consider an international rate plan for frequent travelers. Contact AT&T for details.
Making calls overseas:
- Dial the plus symbol (+) followed by the country code and phone number.
- For example, to call the US, dial +1 followed by the 10-digit number.
Using a local SIM card:
- Unlock your phone if it's eligible (AT&T can help). Requirements include:
- 60+ days of active service
- Up-to-date account payments
- Compatible phone model
- Buy a prepaid SIM card upon arrival in your destination country. These are available at airports, department stores, and phone retailers.
- Replace your AT&T SIM card with the local SIM card to use local service.
Additional tips:
- Prepaid SIM cards often have better data rates than AT&T roaming.
- Unlocked phones can use SIM cards from any carrier.
- Consider data usage limits when using roaming to avoid high charges.
